Downloading:

The best place EVER to download mp3's from is at www.audiogalaxy.com This is a set and forget self downloading program.  Some day I will wake up and find this site gone... Hopefully not before I've downloaded every song in the known universe!   I also discovered a program called cidial that will automatically reconnect your computer to the internet once you get booted off line.  Now you can have a truly automated music downloading machine that will download all night and reconnect by it's self! .

Note: When at www.audiogalaxy.com please note the following: This program is very easy to download music...Just one thing... You can't download music from the web page until you  FIRST DOWNLOAD a program called the SATELLITE and click on the word GO from the satellite program then you can download (hint- click on the picture of the satellite beside each songname).  .

Don't feel stupid everyone makes this mistake!

Finding:

GOT MUSIC?

www.billboard.com has lots of information you can use to track down the kind of music you are looking for

tomszone.com has the most amazing oldies songlists I ever saw!  Over 12000 oldies in three sections.  Probably the most complete oldies list on the web to date.

1. 1955-1965

2. 1966-1975

3. 1976-1986

bangingtunes.com AWESOME trance, techno, psychedelic, acid, rave site.  Has names and artist of rare brand new songs that even they don't stock.  You probably can't buy them but you can download many of them free from other sources.  This site will even let you listen to a free sample of music so you don't waste time trying to download a song you don't like.

progressiveworld.net/masterlist real  good progressive site It gives artists names and album names.  Brand new stuff on top of page.   From there use google to find the tracks to search for on Audiogalaxy.  Little bit of work but you probably wont even be able to buy this stuff at your local record shop /

List of charts all over world I looked at this site briefly /

Here's some songlists I want to take a look at later

here's a huge general songlist / plasticboy.com/songlisthttp://www.btinternet.com/~stoff/musiclist.htm / http://www.global-trance.co.uk/ /

Playing: IMPORTANT UPDATE.  FEB 23 2002.... I'VE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT MEDIA JUKEBOX IS NO LONGER A FREE PROGRAM.  IF ANYONE CAN VERIFY THAT IT IS ONLY A TRIAL VERSION PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  I WILL TAKE IT OFF MY WEBSITE.  I'M NOT IN THE BUSINESS OF PROVIDING FREE ADVERTISEMENT FOR COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE.  IF ANYONE KNOWS ANY REALLY GOOD PLAYERS PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL PUT THEM UP... GUESS YOU WILL HAVE TO USE WINAMP TILL THEN.

SURFSTEVE

Media Jukebox is by far the most powerful mp3 player and organizer I ever found.  The easiest explanation to work the program is:

1. click on tools to import mp3's into media jukebox.  Uncheck all the boxes except the mp3 box there.  (you must first import a file before it can be used in media jukebox.  You are only importing the name by doing this... the file remains unchanged.)  IMPORTANT: After importing don't move files around or rename them with windows explorer or it will mess up your playlists.

2. to play a list you must FIRST go to edit and make an empty playlist.  Second you drop and drag the songs you want into that playlist.  You can drop hundreds of files at a time by using the mouse to draw a box around them and dropping the whole mess into a play list.  I don't fool with smartlists... they are a nice concept but don't work  well in reality...

3. Once you've imported you can  do a control-F to find the songs you are looking for.  You can drop and drag to playlists this way.  You can also more importantly use ctrl-F (find) to clean up duplicate files (songs) by hitting the delete key and checking the delete-file (from hard drive)  box that will come up.  To delete multiple files you can draw a box with your mouse or hold the control key down after your first one and click with your mouse, then press delete-key and get rid of several files at once.   By deleting this way you can delete a file from your hard drive while at the same time removing it from every playlist that it exists in all in one step!

4. To play a play list you have to click on the play list, then go to player and select play.  It will automaticaly start playing the first song but you can click on any song in the list and it will play everything in order from at point.  If you just try and open the play list and click on a song it will only play that song...

NOTES: Maybe they will fix some some of the little quirks in future versions... it still leaves all other programs including Winamp in the dust.   I've noticed that there is a new update I haven't tried I have 7.0 or something and I think they are up to version 7.2... I'll wait till they come up with 8.0 before I upgrade but let me know if the 7.x versions fix any of the minor inconvienances and I may consider upgrading earlier.  I really liked the 6.0 version of media jukebox because it would start playing every playlist from where you left off but it crashed my computer.  Maybe they will figure out how to perfect it in future versions.  The major improvement in 7.x is that the find feature works incredibly fast even searching thru my nearly 3000 mp3's.

11-5-2001... I just discovered a cool program called filegrab that you can use with explorer to copy filenames to make mp3 lists (or any filname list)  from windows explorer to send via email, etc.  to your friends... check it out!
